Lena Marquise (LenaMarquise.com) is a performance artist who focuses on art direction, and works within installations, adding an element of static sculpture – she conveys tension with her choice of position and blocking, as well as the placement of the audience. In concept as well as in practice, Marquise focuses on the duality of creating works as the voyeur, as well as the exhibitionist.
“Body As Commodity” forces the active audience to consider whether using a doll for sexual pleasure commodifies sex more or less immorally than using a real body for amenities that can be monetarily quantified, such as energy; the charging of a mobile phone.
This performance piece uses the exchange of literal energy (battery life) for figurative energy (use of a body) at a monetary expense to exemplify the exchange of simulated sexuality for monetary gain.
Inserting sexually explicit construct into a socially acceptable context, the audience participant is liberated from societal ethics in order to better assess their personal moral stance on the use of a body for personal gain.
The aim of this exchange is to challenge the audience, asking them to question how the social presentation of sexuality may be affecting their seemingly inherent moral standing.
The participant is also forced to reflect on the ability of their desire to become a need, how great their need for energy can become at times of impending technological dissonance (such as a dying mobile phone), and how it can eclipse the social ethics instilled in them.
The dark allure of Dominance and submission has reached a wide array of minds in the past few years. It is our observation that many who resonate with its principles and wish to experience its mysteries lack the proper key (or even door). Mistress Lady Wednesday and La Grotta have jointly fashioned a solution to this problem. “Kink: Theory and Practice” will provide a concise and thorough tutelage to novices of varying experience levels. Our Mistress will be giving an introductory lecture regarding the spectrum of approaches taken to the field of BDSM. After steeping in this knowledge, participants will be provided with hands on experience; an opportunity to play with some of the techniques discussed in a comfortable supervised atmosphere.
The world of kink grants access to deep reserves of power (for Doms, subs, and “switches” alike). In the spirit of mystery and self-exploration, Frater Baldur will be giving a half hour lecture on Sex Magic and its potential application in the realm of Dominance and submission. We will conclude the evening with a social mixer for attendees to mingle and meet with other starry eyed participants.

We met with Lena Marquise, performance artist and creator of all things erotic to discuss porn production and why she makes porn. She reveals what sexuality means to her and why she wants the eroticism she creates to be more that just about arousal and entertainment, but the psychology of both as well.
In the past I have worked on various porn projects and although my work is not always explicitly pornographic, there is nothing I do that doesn’t have some erotic focus. Recently I was working with a company making erotic films, but left because I felt it was moving too much towards the mainstream purely for revenue, and that’s not what I want. I want to express myself and explore various elements of sexuality in an entertaining fashion. There is an intellectual side to porn.
I find most porn incredibly boring and don’t typically watch it. So I’d say I’m making porn for myself, as a way to vent my own, and other people’s, frustrations. Inspiration for my work comes from my own experiences and/or interactions I’ve had with others. I am working on bringing back more artistic erotica as well as exploring the intellectual aspect of human sexuality, gender and social bias.
Sexuality for me exists in the mind as something that triggers the brain to create arousal. Although I believe sexuality exists, I think it coexists with things people choose to think about first: penetration, pain, tension. Sexuality in its raw form is just mindless arousal.
But arousal can be stimulated by something very simple that isn’t necessarily what society might consider sexual. For example, imagine a video of a cucumber repeatedly entering a cup full of vanilla pudding. For one person the images might connote a delicious snack and for another, a memory of getting fisted by someone wearing a green nurse’s glove. Either way, viewers are aroused. In fact, I don’t think that vaginal intercourse is necessarily sexual. I mean if you spoke about it in more medical terms it’s two mucous membranes rubbing against each other in a place that happens to have a particular type of sensitive nerve endings that make it intense. This is what interests me: psychosexuality. I make people think what is it about being dominated or force fed, or whatever their fetish or desire they have, that they find arousing.
In my film work I want to open people’s sexuality in a positive way. I’m not trying to push people to take themselves to dark mental places that make you question the very goodness of humanity. My films focus on arousal of the viewer, and perhaps open internal questions about how they work. In this way, I think porn should exist to give people the option to explore themselves and their sexuality.

In concept as well as in practice, Marquise focuses on the duality of creating works as the voyeur, as well as the exhibitionist.
In “Touch but dont feel.” Marquise invites the audience to be present as voyeurs, and invites them to mentally enter the scene as spectators who fill the empty chair before her.
The rope she is bound by and pulling against shows constant restraint, gag, conveying censorship and constriction of verbally expressing emotions and sexuality. The chair, ever present in the artists work, now takes on an aggressive role, as not only her absent keeper, but also as an introspective on the recent trend to use chairs in sculptural works, as prevalent at the Armory Show 2012. It is the belief of the artist and her contemporaries that emerging trends stifle the artist.
A tangible portion of the installation is the illuminated words cut into a sheet of black plexiglass “LOOK BUT DONT TOUCH // Touch but dont feel.”, which conveys the artist’s implicit and explicit relationships, those between physicality of emotion, and how the latter applies to the former. The graphics which are attached to the title as a means of solidifying intellectual property, calls to mind the stern warning of a mother to “Look with your eyes, not with your hands!”, in contrast to the following which may have been the wispy words in a faint memory of a whore you loved in Amsterdam, whispering with stale cigarette breath, into your ear.
